Since COVID-19 hit the city, there has been a constant drum of people in the media saying that New York is dead. As a life-long New Yorker, I call that bullshit. Even now the city is alive and vibrant, and soon it will be back better than it’s ever been.
I love New York, and wanted to make a project that’s a tribute to the city I love. The opening sequence of Woody Allen’s Manhattan seemed a perfect fit to show the vibrancy and resilience of New York today. In (mostly) recreating the opening shot-for shot I was surprised just how much the city has changed in the 40 years since the original was made, but even more taken aback by how much was exactly as it was back then. Even though it’s always changing, New York is the greatest city in the world - and it always will be.
